When the electricity bill arrives, many bakery owners immediately blame the display case. But more often than not, it's not the case itself — it's how you use it. After visiting dozens of shops, I found these three mistakes are almost universal. Fix them and you'll likely cut your monthly energy cost by 10–20%.
Mistake #1: Turning Off the Display Case at Night to Save Power
The wrong habit: Unplugging the display case every evening when you close, then restarting it the next morning.
What actually happens: Restarting forces the compressor to draw a huge surge of current to cool everything down from scratch — consuming far more power than if it had been left running. Frequent on/off cycles also wear out the compressor faster, leading to costly repairs down the road.
The right way:
Before closing, raise the temperature setting to about 10–12°C (50–54°F) instead of turning it off completely. This reduces compressor workload.
If you absolutely must shut it down, set the thermostat to its stop position one hour before closing, let the interior warm naturally, then cut power.
In the morning, turn the case back on 30 minutes before opening to pre-cool.
✅ Remember: Frequent cycling uses more electricity and shortens equipment life compared to steady operation.
Mistake #2: Overstuffing the Display Case
The wrong habit: Packing every shelf as full as possible — sometimes even blocking the air vents — just to show more products.
What actually happens: Proper airflow is essential for even cooling. When products block the supply or return grilles, cold air can't circulate. The compressor then runs longer and harder to maintain the set temperature, driving up power consumption. Meanwhile, items near the vent may freeze-dry, while those in the middle stay too warm, shortening their shelf life.
The right way:
Leave at least 20% empty space on each shelf to allow air to flow freely.
Keep the area in front of air outlets clear — maintain at least 15 cm (6 inches) of clearance.
Follow the “first in, first out” rule and avoid overstocking at any one time.
⚠️ Overcrowding wastes electricity and degrades product quality — a double loss.
Mistake #3: Placing the Display Case Too Close to the Wall
The wrong habit: Pushing the display case tight against a wall or into a corner to save floor space, leaving only a few centimeters behind it.
What actually happens: The condenser coils at the back and sides need adequate airflow to dissipate heat efficiently. Poor ventilation traps heat, forcing the compressor to work much harder — increasing energy use by 30% or more. In extreme cases, the compressor may overheat and fail entirely.
The right way:
Maintain at least 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) of clearance behind the display case.
Leave at least 10 cm (4 inches) on each side.
Clean the condenser coils every quarter to remove dust buildup.
Never place objects or cloth covers on top of the case.
To sum it up: Don't cycle the power, don't overload the shelves, and don't block the airflow. Correct these three habits and you'll see a noticeable drop in your electric bill — plus longer equipment life and better product consistency.
